Yes they do! (Or they have done.) Take a lump of hash, wrap in
blue paper, write destination on paper and add airmail stamp,
post. US to UK no questions asked. I witnessed the delivery to
an American in student accommodation. I can't remember the cost
as it was some time ago ... 1986 ... but I'd imagine it was
standard airmail weight charges.

I assume that the customs officials on both sides are not looking
for drugs going from US to UK as they normally go the other way.

Greetings:

As best as I can tell, there are actually ***three*** Niven series that deal
with STL travel...

The "Leshy Circuit" (names take from James Branch Cabell's fantasy stories)
included a group of short stories published in the early 70's. For a list,
see "Tales of Known Space".

The "State" stories included "Rammer" (latter "World Out of Time"), and then
the novels "World Out of Time", and the two "Smoke Ring" novels. (From what
I've read, Niven was working on a third at one point...don't know what
happened...)

The "Beowulf" stories are "Beowulf's Children", "Legacy of Heroet" and
"Destiny's Road". These are different from the "State" stories. These have
the colony ships being launched by the UN, have hibernation which **almost**
works (the "State" stories, hibernation could only be overcome by injecting
your memory RNA into a "wiped" person...not good for the person who was
getting wiped, icky for your corpsicle...). "Beowulf" and "Legacy" take place
on the planet with the "Grendel's", "Destiny's Road" clearly takes place in
the same universe--see the "prologue" of a statement by the head of the
UN...but a different planet (one is on a planet of Tau Ceti...can't remember
the other star for the other book...).

All this stuff is good, BTW, but three different universes...
When I moved from Win95 OSR2 to Win98 (1st ed) the number of blue
screens halved. Still bad though. Funny thing is I like
MS Excel and MS IE5. Linux looks like the way forward (when I
I've worked with Linux a fair amount, and while I think it's a great OS,
none of the software I like runs on it... These days I just use Windows
NT, which, when configure properly, is very stable and fast. I only use 98
for modern games, anything that requires DirectX...

I can't wait for Windows 2000 - NT with all the game playing features of
98 I will of course wait six months for the first round of patches...
I've been running Windows 2000 professional (NT Workstation) for a while now
and am quite pleased. I'm now on release candidate 2 and besides having to
do a workaround to install Photoshop 4 I haven't found anything that I run
on 98 that it doesn't handle. It seems to run fairly well on a P166 w/64MB
For the last fifteen years this has been FASA's strength and weakness..
they can't seem to get any good rules for the settings they come up with.
Shadowrun is a great example.. Seattle Sourcebook is in my top three
Earthdawn was another near-miss.. some wonderful ideas (I especially liked
the rules on having to learn about magic items to use them) but will
probably just steal the setting concept for a D&D 3rd campaign next year.
That's the best news I've heard all day. Have you tried running any of the
recent high-end games? (although on a 166 that might not be a great
I've seen it at more than 80 GBP = 120 USD in the UK. The Companion was 40 GBP.
Not every Aslan gets 4 wives. The number of wives is related to status.
A lower class Aslan might have one wife, or none, and the wife he has
will be of similar low status. A noble Ihatei could probably get a low
status wife, but wouldn't want one - he wants a high-status wife
(or, preferably, more than one) that he earned the attention of by
gaining land and glory.

Many Aslan females don't marry at all - they devote themselves to
business or scientific activities, and some hope to increase their
personal status in this fashion and thus be a wife worth earning
the attention of.

AFAIK, no canonical records of Aslan Escort Services exist. Be
warned, the TML has previously discussed the societal impact of
Aslan females in comfy shoes... ;-)
Kiri, just stock up once a year around Passover - when the Coke
Do you read any magazines, etc in the firearms field? At the time there
was quite a lot of fuss and complaints, with many UK gun owners moving
their firearms to clubs on the Continent. I suspect that their opinions
simply weren't considered 'newsworthy' by the mainstream press, etc.
Having tried '98 on my P133 (32MB) I can say from personal experience
that for good results you need something bigger for good results. Kinda
scary considering that NT4 performs at least as well as '95 on it.
